Algarve Chimney

The Algarve from the Arabic Al-Gharb, meaning "The West" is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal.   It has an area of 4,997 square kilometres (1,929 sq mi) with About 500.000 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities.

The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Production of food, which includes fish and other seafood, fruit, oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, is also economically important in the region.

The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve annually.

The Algarve is currently the third richest region in Portugal, after Lisbon and Madeira, with a GDP per capita 86% of the European Union average.

Algarve, the award winning destination

So what makes the Algarve so famous and such a great place for the hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers from around the world that fly into Faro Airport or drive or sail from other parts of Europe each year? It’s the promise of sun-drenched days at the beach, the great golf that the region offers with about 40 golf courses, the endless options for dining out at very reasonable price, lots of things to do for the all family and of course the friendliness of the people wherever you go. However the Algarve should also be known for its truly unique contrast between the golden coastline and the beautiful rural countryside, its many historic villas and attractions and thousands of species of flora and fauna, making it the perfect holiday destination for interests such as photography, painting, nature watching, walking and other outdoor pursuits.

The Algarve, Portugal, is only about a 2 to 3 hour flight from the United Kingdom, Ireland and many other parts of Europe and flights arrive to the region's sole international airport, Faro Airport in central Algarve. Faro flights arrive daily throughout the year, with several arrivals and departures each day from airlines during the busiest summer months of July to September

Algarve Beaches

Portugal's premier holiday destination sold its soul to tourism in the sixties and never really looked back. Behind sections of the south coast's beachscape especially in the central Algarve, loom massive conglomerations of bland holiday villas and brash resorts. However the east and west coasts are less developed, with more about nature and less about development.
And yet coastal Algarve is only a part of the picture for any visitor. The enchanting inner Algarve boasts pretty castle towns and historic villages, cork tree, flower-covered hillsides and abundant birdlife.

The Algarve has truly become a major destination for beach and golf holidays with several awards to prove it in the last few years.
In 2012 and 2013 at the World Travel Awards, the Algarve was awarded “ Best European Beach Destination” beating off Cannes (France), Corfu (Greece), Costa Esmeralda (Sardinia, Italy), Marbella (Spain) and Oludeniz (Turkey).
The World Travel Award for "Europe’s Best Golf Destination" went to Portugal, which was competing against England, France, Germany, Ireland, Scotland and Spain. Of course most of the golf courses, about 40, are in the Algarve.
